The meeting of the Tourism Committee of ECO, organized within the framework of the 34th Regional Planning Council meeting of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO), was held in Tehran, Islamic Republic of Iran, under the chairmanship of Azerbaijan.
Azerbaijan was represented at the event by Jalil Malikov, Deputy Chairman of the Administration of the State Tourism Agency and Head of the International Relations Department.
During the meeting, key topics were discussed in line with the organization’s 2024 work plan. These included the establishment of a Consultative Committee on Tourism for ECO region countries, the development of general sustainability criteria for accommodation establishments in the region—prepared by the Working Group on Tourism Standardization—and the creation of a dedicated working group to strengthen Silk Road tourism cooperation among member states.
Additionally, discussions focused on initiatives to protect the monuments and cultural heritage of the ancient Silk Road in collaboration with the ECO and UNESCO. The meeting also addressed the appointment of new "ECO Tourism Ambassadors", a newly launched project aimed at promoting the tourism potential of member states on a wider scale.
